The 16th game of the ongoing Sheffield Shield saw Victoria and South Australia lock horns at the Adelaide Oval. South Australia fought back to recover from a dire situation of 16/4 to 252 all out in the first innings. The clash had one of the most interesting moments of the tournament so far as Jake Graser-McGurk was recalled by Victoria skipper Will Surtherland after being adjudged out by the umpire.

Taking the strike in the 30th over, he swung his bat on a delivery and was beaten all ends up when he was on 10. The delivery was deflected off the hands of the wicketkeeper and landed in the hands of the first slip. After the umpire initially ruled him out, the batter was recalled back by Sutherland. The decision by the Victoria players helped the 21-year-old reach his century and stabilise the innings for South Australia as Fraser-McGurk scored 101 off 106 deliveries to take side to a respectable total.

I was a bit in disbelief: Jame Fraser-McGurk

Speaking of the incident, Fraser-McGurk came forward to state that he was in disbelief over the umpire’s decision. He also stated that the decision was the correct one in the end.

“I missed it by probably three feet; it spun a fair bit, and I think it came off Sam Harper’s glove before Peter Handscomb caught it. Sometimes they (the opposition teams) are just like, 'yay'... and it could have been not a serious appeal, but then the umpire’s starting to nod his head, and I was a bit in disbelief,” Fraser-McGurk was quoted as saying by Wisden.

“So I started walking off, then seconds later he (umpire Michael Graham-Smith) changed his decision, and the Vic boys weren’t too happy with that because they thought they had made a few unlucky decisions. But that’s the game, and in the end, it was the right umpiring call, and that’s what you want,” he added.
