Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of T20 World Cup 2022, BCCI confirms
Earlier, there were hopes of the pacer recovering within four to six weeks.
The BCCI Medical team has ruled out Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The decision was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists. Bumrah, was initially ruled out from the ongoing Mastercard 3-match T20I series against South Africa due to a back injury. The BCCI will be naming a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in the squad for the marquee tournament soon.
Earlier, there were hopes for the pacer to make a comeback within four to six weeks. Even the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and head coach Rahul Dravid were hopeful of Bumrah recovering in time or it seems, they were waiting for the official confirmation from the medical team.
Interestingly, Bumrah had only returned to action in the bilateral series against Australia playing two T20Is of the three-match series. Ahead of the first T20I against South Africa in Trivandrum, Rohit Sharma termed his injury only as a 'niggle'. However, the extent of it as only confirmed once the fast bowler went for scans.
Jasprit Bumrah played only 5 T20Is this year
Jasprit Bumrah missed out of action in the Asia Cup as well due to a back injury and it is perplexing to see him getting ruled out for the same injury now. Moreover, he was well rested for India games this year to manage his workload and played only five T20Is throughout the 2022.
His injury comes as a huge blow for India who were banking on the pacer for his four overs, especially in the death overs. With India's recent record being extremely poor in the final five overs, it remains to be seen who replaces Bumrah. Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami are among the reserves while it was reported recently that Umran Malik and Mohammed Siraj were added to the reserves list as well.
