Tasmanian talented batter, Caleb Jewell has emerged as a contender to fill David Warner's shoes for the Australian Test team. With Australian summer right around the corner, Jewell's impressive knock of 69 not out for Australia A against New Zealand A in Brisbane has become the highlight.
On a day dominated by the home team at Allan Border Field, it was Jewell's standout performance that stole the spotlight. The young batter’s brilliant half-century guided Australia A to a score of 3-141, following a superb bowling effort that restricted New Zealand A to 147 all out in 44.5 overs.
Local lad Mark Steketee gave the Australians a strong start, taking two wickets in successive balls and leaving the Kiwis at 2-4. However, New Zealand A's captain Tom Bruce and opener Sean Solia managed to steady the ship with a good partnership. Jordan Buckingham's wicket of Solia triggered a collapse for New Zealand A, who lost five wickets for just 15 runs around lunchtime.
As the pace attack wreaked havoc, leg-spinner Mitch Swepson also joined the party, taking crucial wickets. Swepson's excellent bowling performance yielded three wickets for just 19 runs. New Zealand A's tailenders fought a bit, pushing their total to 147.
In response, Tasmanian opener Tim Ward showed a bit of promise before falling for 16. But it was Caleb Jewell who truly shone. The young batter wasted no time in making his presence felt, playing a few stunning shots, including a brilliant cover drive off Scott Kuggeleijn. His fluent strokeplay guided him to a well-deserved half-century from just 63 balls.
Jewell's attacking batting was complemented by the steady presence of Campbell Kellaway, who remained unbeaten on 10 as the day's play came to an end.
Jewell did really well in the game, and now more people including fans and analysts are thinking he could take David Warner's place in the Test team. Cricket fans are getting ready for a fun season, and they're watching Jewell closely to see if he can earn a special spot in the national team.
