'Could not stop cheering and clapping for him' - Jitesh Sharma opens up on Sanju Samson's performance vs Bangladesh

Much like a lot of Indian cricketers of the present day and age, Jitesh Sharma ascended into the limelight due to consistent performances in the Indian Premier League. However, things have not quite gone his way after being integrated into the national setup. A combination of below-par performances and an overflow of resources have seen him feature in a limited number of games up until now. It was more of the same during India's recently-concluded T20I series against Bangladesh.

In a recent discussion, the wicketkeeper-batter showered praise on Sanju Samson's blistering 111-run knock that he played in Hyderabad, as well as expressed the pure happiness he felt for his compatriot. 

“It was an eye-pleasant experience after I watched Sanju Samson’s batting. He has always been a very good batter and as a team, we knew that he would play such kind of innings one day. I was watching his innings from the dugout and I could not stop cheering and clapping for him. His innings was breathtaking. Everyone enjoyed it. He is an experienced player and I always look to learn from him”, stated Jitesh, as quoted by Zee News.

Jitesh also provided insight into his outlook while representing the nation and made it clear that others' performances were just another driving force for him to improve his game.

“There’s no insecurity at all. If someone scored a hundred, I will look to score 101 runs. Rather than being insecure, I get motivated after seeing other players performing. After all, we all are playing for the country. There’s no insecurity at all. When the right time comes, I know God will shower blessings in abundance and I will get to play,” mentioned Jitesh.

I am quite aware of what kind of a guy he is: Jitesh 

With the mega-auction for IPL 2025 set to take place in couple of months, Jitesh talked about the developments between his current franchise, the Punjab Kings, and himself. 

“I have not been contacted as of now by the Punjab Kings Management. I do not know whether they will retain me or not. Be it any team, all I can do is give my best on the field,” noted Jitesh.

Jitesh, who was with the Mumbai Indians for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, recounted his stint alongside the then-head coach of MI, Ricky Ponting.

“Not everyone knows but I have worked with Ricky Ponting when I was with the Mumbai Indians. I am quite aware of what kind of a guy he is. I enjoyed my time with him, he is very focused on the game. If at all I get retained by the Punjab Kings, I am really looking to play under the coaching of Ricky Ponting”, added Jitesh.

Having stepped down from the ropes of the Delhi Capitals after spending seven seasons with the franchise, Ponting was recently appointed by PBKS on a four-year contract. It would most probably do Jitesh the world of good if at all he ends up being retained by PBKS.
