Joe Root is not just incredibly experienced, the way he connects with other players is magnificent: Kumar Sangakkara
Root has been signed by Paarl Royals for SA20 2025.
With Jos Buttler pulling out of the 2025 edition of the SA20 due to wanting to commit to his national side, the Paarl Royals had to sign a quality attacking batter who would fit their roster and be a like-to-like replacement for the white-ball captain of England. They surely went on to sign a quality player in the form of former Indian wicketkeeper, Dinesh Karthik, as one of their star overseas players ahead of the auction.
Former Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara, now the Director of Cricket of the Rajasthan Royals, spoke about the significance of Karthik as an acquisition and richly elaborated on why he thought the ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru player would be a valuable asset to the side.
"Dinesh Karthik, again, is fantastic at the back end of an innings. He's explosive, capable, and one of the best finishers in T20 cricket worldwide. His presence and experience are crucial. With Jos leaving, who typically excels at the top, we've managed to split that responsibility between two different players, both equally capable and devastating. I think we've got a better balance than we had last time," stated Sangakkara, as quoted by India Today.
The other player Sangakkara was alluding to above was none other than ace batter of England, Joe Root, with the erstwhile Lankan legend commenting on the likable attributes of the ex-English skipper.
"It's very important. Joe Root is not just an incredibly experienced and capable player; what he adds to the team in terms of knowledge, experience, and how he invests himself into the team and connects with other players is magnificent. I saw this first-hand when he joined us in the IPL," mentioned Sangakkara.
I believe we are better equipped this year: Sangakkara
Sangakkara felt that the Paarl Royals are better balanced for the upcoming edition than they were for the past two seasons. The seasoned campaigner also elaborated on what was needed in addition to technical prowess to get over the line in crunch situations.
"It's about recognizing the big moments and being ready to perform. With the South African contingent and David Miller as captain, who has been amazing for us, the key is getting the players to step up in crucial moments. Skill is just one part of the game; executing that skill under pressure when the tournament is on the line is the second part. That comes down to mental makeup and adaptability. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to convert those moments in the past, but I believe we are better equipped this year," added Sangakkara.

While Sangakkara has already worked with Root in the IPL, it will be the first time he will be alongside Karthik in the same dressing room.
