In the thrilling ODI World Cup 2023 final at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, on Sunday, Rohit Sharma's Indian team succumbed to a six-wicket defeat against Australia, while defending a total of 240 runs. The match drew esteemed dignitaries, celebrities, and a special appearance along with PM Narendra Modi. Rumours hinted at invites for the former World Cup-winning captains, Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. It was a star-studded affair, indeed, with an electrifying atmosphere. But, it wasn’t meant to be.
Surprisingly, neither Kapil Dev nor MS Dhoni graced the marquee event's final. Notably, Dhoni has been holidaying with his family in his ancestral village in Uttarakhand. The former world champion captain was anticipated to join, yet failed to make an appearance in the summit clash. In the same vein, India's first-ever World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev mentioned that the BCCI didn't extend an invitation for the World Cup 2023 Finals, explaining his absence. The absence of both the stalwarts of the game added an unexpected twist to the anticipated gathering of cricketing legends at the grand event.
“I wasn’t invited. They didn’t call me so I did not go. As simple as that. I wanted the whole ’83 team to be there with me but I guess due to the fact that it’s such a big event and people are so busy handling responsibilities, sometimes they forget,” Dev said while speaking to ABP News.
MS Dhoni on vacation amidst speculations over not attending ODI World Cup Finals
The absence of MS Dhoni was felt keenly at the Narendra Modi Stadium during the India vs Australia final on November 19. However, the former skipper's heartwarming moments with wife Sakshi and family in Uttarakhand captured attention. Sakshi shared their retreat in Lawali, nestled in Almora district, on her Instagram handle. Despite missing from the stands, 'Captain Cool's off-field moments showcased a different side, resonating with fans and followers alike.

Despite speculations, the triumphant captain of India's 2011 ODI WC, remained absent at the final. Sourav Ganguly, former skipper and BCCI chief, graced the match where Pat Cummins & Co. dominated. India's stellar run of 10 consecutive wins in the mega event at home ended in a one-sided final. The team, under pressure, missed the chance to claim another ICC title despite their memorable journey.
