Key for both teams will be to get Steve Smith, Virat Kohli early: Finch

The ultimate objective of India and Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, according to former Australia captain, Aaron Finch, would be to get Steve Smith and Virat Kohli earlier. The one-off Test between the two top sides in Test cricket will begin on June 7, at The Oval, in London.

Ahead of the marquee event, the former Australian skipper and opener, Aaron Finch hopes that Australia will try dismiss Virat Kohli as early as possible. Furthermore, Finch showed his faith in Smith's abilities by pointing out his stellar track record. He also mentioned that he is anticipating a highly competitive match. 

"Both Kohli and Smith will be batting at number four, so the key is to try and get them as early as possible. Early wickets to expose them to the brand new ball will be absolutely key. I will always side with Steve Smith, I think his record is outstanding, but it will be a very good contest," Finch told Star Sports.

India has had the better of Australia in the last three series: Finch

Finch acknowledged that Australia and India have a fierce rivalry and said that it brings out the best in both sides. Moreover, when it comes to playing ata neutral venue, things can get even more interesting. The prime reason for it being the fact that no side has a clear home advantage.

"Obviously, India has had the better of Australia in the last three series, I think, so both teams will rise to the occasion no matter where it's played, at home or away or this time at neutral territory. It's just a must-watch thing," the 36-year-old added.

The former Australian batting legend backed Smith on account of his exceptional track record in the longest format of the game. The 33-year-old batter’s ability to consistently score runs and contribute significantly to the team's success has garnered him high praise from cricket fans all over the world. So far in Test cricket, he has amassed 8792 runs from 169 innings, including 30 centuries, four double-centuries, and 37 fifties at a strike rate of 53.9.

The second edition of the WTC final is crucial for both India and Australia as they compete for the prestigious title. Notably, India have recently triumphed over Australia in the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy in March 2023. Australia, however, are determined to put up a strong fight at the Oval.
