Curtly Ambrose is one of the most lethal bowlers to grace the world of cricket. The West Indies legend who goes by his height of 6 ft and 7 inches, was a force to reckon with when he was handed leather in his hand. He represented the Caribbean nation in 98 Tests and grabbed 405 wickets at a scintillating average of 20.99. Not only him, but the whole breed of players around him commanded respect from other countries as they entered the hallow ground.

Ambrose was asked to pick the all-time West Indies XI on one occasion. The 61-year-old made sure that the team looked as dreadful as his sharp bouncers. The likes of Vivian Richards, Garfield Sobers and Malcolm Marshall, all were part of his eleven. There was no place for any current-generation player amongst the greats of West Indies cricket, but Brian Lara was the close one to cut.

Curtly Ambrose’s all-time West Indies XI:

Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Sir Vivian Richards, Brian Lara,  Everton Weekes, Garfield Sobers, Jeffrey Dujon (wk), Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Curtly Ambrose, Lance Gibbs, Clyde Walcott (12th man and backup wicketkeeper).

Speaking of Ambrose, the veteran joined Jamaica Tallawah’s franchise ahead of Caribbean Premier League 2022 as the bowling coach, while former West Indies batter, Shivnarine Chanderpaul was appointed as the Head Coach of the team. Ambrose was conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus in October 2024.

While reflecting on his playing days and answering a question posed where he was asked about one batter who gave him sleepless nights, the legend named no one. He is currently working with the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons as their bowling coach and was last seen donning the role in CPL 2024.
