Star batter Virat Kohli was once again seen stepping out as Royal Challengers Bangalore's stand-in skipper on Wednesday, 26 April during their game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Kohli won the toss and invited KKR to bat first at the high-scoring venue.
During the toss, the 34-year-old once again got a rousing reception from RCB’s home crowd and had to wait for some time to tell his decision to Ravi Shastri amid the deafening roar from the fans. On being asked what did he decide to do first after winning the toss, the stand-in RCB skipper said, “Wait a minute” and shared a laugh with Shastri.
Kohli has been captaining RCB for three consecutive games after Faf du Plessis injured his rib while fielding against Chennai Super Kings in their fifth fixture of IPL 2023. Since then, du Plessis is only coming out to bat for his side and has been substituted by the ‘Impact Player’ during RCB’s fielding. Since the rules don’t allow impact substitutes to captain the side, Kohli has been captaining the team in Du Plessis’s absence.
He's led the side to two wins in two matches so far against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals respectively. Sharing an update on Du Plessis’s fitness at the toss, Kohli said that hopefully, the regular skipper will get fit by their next game against Lucknow Super Giants on May 1.
Further sharing his experience on captaining RCB for the first time since 2021, when he stepped down as the full-time skipper, Kohli said that it was unexpected for him to get to lead the side again but it has been fun so far.
It's been fun so far: Virat Kohli (on captaining the side)
“It was unexpected but nothing I'm not used to (stand-in captaincy). It's been fun so far because of the way the team has been playing. Faf will play the impact role again tonight. We are playing the same team as the last game. Hopefully, he will lead from the next game onwards but yeah tonight he will play the same role that he played in the last 2 games,” said Kohli at the toss.
Coming back to the match, KKR got off to a good start as Jason Roy (56 off 29) and N Jagadeesan (27 off 29) added 83 runs for the first wicket in 56 balls. Following their dismissals, captain Nitish Rana (48 off 21), Rinku Singh (18* off 10) and David Wiese (12* off 3) got their side to 200/5 in the first innings. Wanindu Hasaranga (2/24) and Vijaykumar Vyshak (2/41) picked up two wickets each for RCB in their four-over spells.
