The summit clash of the 2019 ODI World Cup is widely regarded as one of the greatest matches in the history of the sport. With the tie ending in England’s favour after a controversial finish, despite the countless broken hearts of both the Black Caps’ fans and players, the squad took the heartbreaking defeat with good spirits.
Star New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson recently came forward to talk about the summit clash of the 2019 World Cup. The 32-year-old opined that the match is still fresh in his memory but also stated that the entire team has moved on and still plays competitively against England whenever both sides take centre stage.
"I still have vivid memories of walking out on the last day, banners flying for the World Cup final at Lord’s and just the whole spectacle. It was a great day of cricket. Clearly, it came right down to the last moment and that’s great too but it’s been four years,” Lockie Ferguson told The Guardian.
"We’ve played a lot of cricket since then, we’ve got a lot of mates in the English side. You won’t see any animosity or anything like that, but when we cross the line we’re playing competitive cricket,” he added.
I certainly think this is an exceptional group of players: Ferguson
Furthermore, Lockie Ferguson also talked of New Zealand’s chances at the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. The pacer claimed that the side is not only focused on winning trophies but also possesses the ability to take on any side in world cricket.
"I certainly think this is an exceptional group of players, so of course, we turn up to every tournament trying to win it. Some teams probably think they’ve got more of a chance, which is fair, but I don’t think any team’s turning up thinking they can’t. Certainly, that’s our attitude,” Ferguson said.
"We play professional sports; we’re there to win games, and as a group, that’s all we can focus on: what we do well as a team, play the cricket we play, with the culture, with the enjoyment factor,” he added.
