Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on Saturday, August 24. He featured in 34 Test matches, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is and scored 10,867 international runs for India. The Delhi-born cricketer also has 24 centuries to his name and is regarded as one of the finest ODI openers for India in history.

The southpaw was the captain of Punjab Kings in IPL 2024 but due to a shoulder injury, he was ruled out for the rest of the tournament. He has not opened up about the injury ever since and three months after the completion of the tournament, Dhawan announced his retirement, which according to him was an emotional decision but not tough.

He claimed to feel the emotions of love and gratitude and stated that it is now time for him to relax and enjoy time at home.

“Not tough, but it is emotional, yes — but not in the sense of me being sad about it. I feel the emotion of gratitude and love. I have given half of my waking life to cricket, and it’s time now to retire, or rather, give ‘vishraam’ to it. I’m totally enjoying relaxing and spending time at home,” Dhawan told Hindustan Times.

Apart from being a terrific batter, Dhawan also made a name for himself for being an absolute entertainer. He makes videos and shares them on his Instagram, which helped the cricketer earn plenty of followers on the social media site. It has also assured Dhawan that despite announcing his retirement from cricket, the fans will keep loving him for the videos that he posts and that he will not lose fame.

“Why will I lose fame if I give up cricket? Who knows, the fame might increase also. Main logon ke dilon mein basa hua hoon. Not only through cricket…sometimes even through my Instagram reels (laughs). I’m definite that the love I get from people will continue to grow,” Dhawan said.
