The much-awaited fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is all set to commence on Sunday, July 30 after Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the schedule of the event on Sunday, June 18. Much like the previous editions, the forthcoming season of the top-tier league will five teams battling it out for the coveted title.

The five participants - Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Aura, Galle Titans, Jaffna Kings and B-Love Kandy - will play as many as 20 matches in the group stage, which will be followed by four knockout games. The teams will contest in a double round-robin format, which essentially means that each side will play every other side twice in the group phase. Notably, defending champions Jaffna Kings will square off against Colombo Strikers in the curtain raiser on Sunday, July 30.

The franchises that make it to the top four of points table will progress to the playoffs - Qualifier 1, Eliminator and the Qualifier 2 and the summit clash, which will take place on Sunday, August 20, with a reserve day on August 21.

Jaffna Kings have been dominant since the inception of the league, having clinched three titles on the trot since 2020. R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy are the two venues that will host the fourth edition of the LPL.

The initial leg of the competition will be played in Colombo before the second leg in Kandy. The tournament will be back in Colombo for the the playoffs, providing a fitting setting for the climax of the tournament.

SLC decided to have an IPL-styled player auction which concluded on June 14, as fans witnessed an array of cricketers being snapped up by the five franchises. For the record, Dilshan Madushanka was the most expensive player, signed by the defending champions Jaffna for a mammoth $92,000 in the accelerated round. With nearly a month to go before the tournament kickstarts, teams have begun ideating for the event so as to clinch the prestigious title.
