In an innovative and dynamic move, the 2024 edition of the Lanka Premier League will introduce two additional powerplay overs during the business end of innings. These "power-blast" overs, scheduled for the 16th and 17th overs of each completed innings, will augment the existing rule of having two fielders positioned outside the 30-yard circle in the first six overs. Notably, during these couple of overs, up to four fielders will be allowed outside the ring, adding yet another strategic dimension to the game.

Beyond the designated power-blast overs, the standard allowance remains with a maximum of five fielders permitted in the outfield. The new feature is designed to create "a more aggressive and thrilling phase of the game", according to a LPL statement.

"We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year. This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategise effectively to make the most of this period," stated Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL's tournament director, in a statement.

Marking the tournament's fifth edition, the 2024 season will feature 20 league encounters among five franchises, culminating in three playoffs and the grand final. Each team will face every other team twice during the league phase, with four out of the five teams advancing to the playoffs.

Among the participating teams is the newly-established franchise, Dambulla Sixers, based in Dambulla. The change in ownership of the Dambulla team was recently announced, following Sri Lanka Cricket's decision to terminate the previous franchise, Dambulla Thunders. This action was taken due to the arrest of one of the co-owners, Tamim Rahman, by the Sri Lanka police under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act.

The LPL 2024 is scheduled to take place from July 1 to 21, overlapping significantly with USA's Major League Cricket. The latter will showcase a greater number of prominent international players, contrasting with the LPL's historical challenge in attracting foreign talent due to financial considerations, despite its substantial support among local enthusiasts.
