The second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Adelaide Oval between Australia and India saw a blackout during the opening day of play. While fans, players, and commentators speculated about the cause, former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has revealed the real reason.
The floodlights at Adelaide Oval failed not once, but twice, briefly stopping play. The first interruption, lasting 28 seconds, occurred during the 18th over of Australia’s innings. The second, lasted 86 seconds. Fans turned the stadium into a light show, as they switched on their phone torches as players and commentators speculated about the issue.
Haddin revealed that the blackout happened because of a mix-up involving Nathan Lyon. He mentioned that they turned the wrong switch which caused the interruption.
“I was speaking to the ground staff and it was all about Nathan Lyon. Nathan Lyon went out the back for a hit and they went to turn the lights on and whatever happened, they turned the wrong set off and the lights went off and Nathan Lyon said, ‘I’ve got to fix this so I can go out and bat in the nets. They politely said to Nathan, the lights are off on the ground, we’re not so worried about your hit at the moment. So that’s come hot off the press from the curators," Haddin said on The Willow Talk podcast.
Meanwhile, the blackout wasn’t the only drama in Adelaide as Australia stormed their way back into the series, defeating India by 10 wickets. After being bowled out for 180 in the first innings, India struggled to recover as Mitchell Starc dismantled India’s batting lineup with a six-wicket haul, while Travis Head’s 140 further extended the visitors’ misery.
India were dismissed for 175 in the second innings, posting a target of just 19 runs, which the hosts chased down in merely 3.2 overs. The victory guided Australia to the top of the World Test Championship table while affecting India’s chances of clinching the final spot.
