Mark Boucher is set to vacate his role as the head coach of the South Africa side after the T20 World Cup 2022 and Malibongwe Maketa has been named as the interim head coach for the Proteas. Maketa will start his assignments with the three-match Test tour to Australia in December and has been appointed until January.
The 42-year-old is currently the head of the South Africa ‘A’ setup and also has been taking care of the National Academy. Prior to this, he served as an assistant coach in the South Africa national side from the period of 2017 to 2019.
Maketa is a familiar face to the environment: Enoch Nkwe
South Africa’s director of cricket, Enock Nkwe was delighted to announce that Maketa will take over the Proteas side after the mega ICC event in Australia and noted how his previous experience with the side was helpful while picking him. He went on to mention that the need of the hour was someone to step in for a crucial series straightaway and was confident about Maketa doing well for the Proteas.
"We are pleased to name Malibongwe as our interim coach to lead the Proteas in Australia. He is a familiar face to the environment and has worked in the same space previously when he served as assistant coach,” Enoch Nkwe was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
"Mali knows most of the players well; they know him too; and with such a short time between now and the tour, we as Cricket South Africa felt we needed someone who could step in immediately and lead us through what is an important series for the Proteas.”
"We would like to wish him well on his appointment. He has our full support, and we have no doubt he will do South Africans proud in this series," he added.
