A shocking incident took place in Tamil Nadu’s Poyyur village in Ariyalur district, where a cricket fan murdered his friend for speaking ill of his favourite cricketers. The incident reportedly took place on Thursday, when the accused and the deceased went going out for a drink. A heated conversation between the two turned wild when one of them killed the other.
As per the officials, the two were having a cricket discussion in an open area near SIDCO Industrial Estate, near Mallur, on Tuesday night. The deceased, identified as 24-year-old P Vignesh, booed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, which made the accused, S Dharmaraj, impatient and the two got into a fight before the accused allegedly killed his pal by stabbing him to death.
“Both had consumed liquor. As per the initial investigation, Vignesh was supporting Mumbai Indians in Indian Premier League (IPL) while Dharmaraj was a Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) supporter,” Keelapur police said.
“During the course of their debate, Vignesh had allegedly mocked RCB and Virat Kohli. Vignesh had the habit of body shaming Dharmaraj, who was a stammerer. On that day he had made some remarks comparing the RCB team to the speaking difficulty of Dharmaraj. This infuriated Dharmaraj who attacked Vignesh with a bottle and later hit him with a cricket bat on the head. Dharmaraj soon fled the spot,” officials said.
The police confirmed that Vignesh's corpse was discovered by locales who work in SIDCO factory. The police have sent the Vignesh's body for autopsy in a local governemt hospital, while a case has been registered against the accused.
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian squad is currently in Australia training for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. India played two practice matches against Western Australia XI recently and while the Men in Blue won the first game, they lost the second encounter by 36 runs. India will now face Australia and New Zealand in their official warm-up fixture ahead of their campaign opener on October 23 against arch-rivals Pakistan.
