Marcus Stoinis in selection spotlight as Australia hope to move on from Chennai drubbing

The ODI World Cup 2023 got off to a horrid start for Pat Cummins-led Australia. Taking on India in their first game of the tournament, the side sustained a hefty loss. It is worth noting that the team went into the game on the back of a couple of injuries. 

After Travis Head’s unavailability, ace all-rounder Marcus Stoinis also missed out on the India game after not featuring in several other games for Australia in recent weeks. However, as the side’s upcoming game of the World Cup approaches, skipper Pat Cummins provided a positive update on Stoinis’ injury.

Cummins confirmed that Stoinis is fit and ready and will be available for selection for their clash against South Africa at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday, October 12.

I wouldn't look too far into the last game: Cummins

Furthermore, Pat Cummins also talked about Adam Zampa’s preparation ahead of Australia’s next game. The ace spinner struggled against India and failed to take any wickets. Speaking of the same, Cummins opined that he would not look too far into the last game and that Zampa has been training lighter than usual to avoid any hiccups. 

"(Zampa's) prep leading in was probably a bit lighter than what he would normally have, but I wouldn't look too far into the last game, I thought he bowled OK, but it's pretty hard defending 200 to try to create something out of nothing,” Pat Cummins was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au

"I'm sure he'll be great out there, and if he has a bit more of a total to bowl to, he's one of our key guys,” Cummins added.

As the clash against South Africa approaches, Australia will be keen on putting in an improved performance against the Proteas. It could be quite a challenge, given the performance that South Africa put forth in their previous game. The side will look to register yet another win.
