Matthew Mott has stepped down from his role as the head coach of England in white-ball cricket. He will be replaced by assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, who has been appointed on an interim basis. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the development by releasing an official statement on Tuesday, July 30.
In May 2022, England decided to have different coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket. While Brendon McCullum took up the role in Tests, Mott was appointed as the head coach for ODIs and T20Is. The latter gave immediate success to the Three Lions as he helped them win the T20 World Cup in 2022. However, Jos Buttler and Co. had a disappointing run in the ODI World Cup last year and were ousted in the semi-finals in last month's T20 World Cup.
Mott said it was an honour to coach the England team and expressed his gratitude to the players, the management, and the ECB for their support during his tenure. He also thanked the England fans for rooting for the team through thick and thin.
“I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour. We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022," Mott said in ECB's press release.
“I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories. Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world," he added.
Meanwhile, several names are in contention to grab England's white-ball head coach position.
