‘Maybe we were casual because we scored 213’ - Prithvi Shaw reflects on Delhi Capitals' disastrous fielding against Punjab Kings
"I think our spinners did a really good job on this kind of wicket. Dropped catches - I think it happens in the game," Shaw said.
The 64th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the David Warner-led Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on May 17.
With the brilliance of Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, and Rilee Rossouw, Delhi Capitals posted 213 runs on the board for Punjab to chase. However, despite the side posting a mammoth total on the board, Punjab came very close to chasing the target down, thanks to excellent performance of Liam Livingstone.
It was also through the subpar performance of the Delhi fielders that Punjab managed to reach within touching distance of the target. There were several occasions when the players misfielded or even dropped catches, which hindered their momentum.
Seeing their subpar performance during the run chase, opener Prithvi Shaw came to the front and brought to notice the fielding standards of the side. Shaw even opined that the team was playing too casually after notching up a big total on the scoreboard.
"Like you said, it was tough for the fast bowlers out there. But I think our spinners did a really good job on this kind of wicket. Dropped catches - I think it happens in the game, but maybe we were a little casual in between because we scored 213. But a win is a win. Obviously, a little bit late, but we will enjoy it today. Everyone putting their hands up and not giving anything away. Everyone is smiling," Shaw said in a video uploaded by the IPL.
The win for Delhi Capitals meant disaster for Punjab Kings. The Shikhar Dhawan-led side were in contention to make it to the knockout stages of the tournament. However, after the loss, their net run rate has taken a hit and they now find themselves in eighth place in the IPL points table. With just one game left in the group stages for them, Punjab would look to register a big win in their next clash, although that will still not guarantee them going through.
