MCC suggests reduction of ODI cricket post 2027

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) recently came forward to make a bold suggestion to limit men’s ODI cricket, specifically the bilateral series that are played throughout the year. The MCC suggested the changes be made after the end of the 2027 World Cup.

The MCC's World Cricket Committee recently assembled at Lord’s Cricket Ground after the second Ashes 2023, where suggestions were made and many were of the opinion that the changes to ODI cricket are necessary, keeping in mind the constant rise of T20 leagues around the globe.

The 13-member committee was led by former English cricketer Mike Gatting, and one of the biggest suggestions made was a significant reduction in ODI cricket, as doing the same would result in a much-needed gap in the cricket calendar. Recently, Wasim Khan, the ICC's general manager of cricket, said nothing is going to be removed from ODI cricket, but the format will have to find a way to co-exist with the constant rise of T20 cricket.

It is clear that T20 leagues across the globe are dominating the cricket world at the moment. With many revered international players like Trent Boult and Jason Roy left their central contracts and gave importance to the T20 leagues like the Big Bash and the IPL (Indian Premier League). 

ODI World Cup 2023 kicks off on October 5 in India

Speaking of ODI cricket, the World Cup 2023 is right around the corner. With India hosting the competition this time around, the fans lie in wait to see the best of the best face each other for the coveted title.

Notably, the marquee tournament kicks off with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in the season opener on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. 

Furthermore, the Indian team will kick off their tournament by taking on Australia on October 8, in Chennai. It has been 10 years since the side won their last ICC title, and led by Rohit Sharma, India will be keen on breaking their ICC curse and bringing the title home.
