Melbourne Stars appoint Marcus Stoinis as new Captain ahead of BBL 2024-25
"I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in Maxi's absence last year," said Stoinis.
Melbourne Stars have named the star Australia all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis, their new Captain ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL 2024-25) season. He replaced Glenn Maxwell, who recently resigned from his position. He was braced to hold the position in the 2022-23 BBL season after Maxwell injured his leg. But Melbourne Stars chose Adam Zampa for the captaincy responsibilities.
Speaking of Stoinis’ experience as the captain, he has led Stars only once, due to Maxwell’s unavailability in the last season. He is the second player after Glenn Maxwell to play 100 BBL matches for Stars and also opted for a three-year contract extension last season. After the 35-year-old was named the new skipper, he stated that he was honoured to take the role.
"I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in Maxi's absence last year and loved the opportunity so to be given the role full-time is a great honour. The Stars have been such a constant in my life every summer for the last 10 years and I truly believe that the group we have assembled both on and off the field can bring some long overdue success to the club,” said Stoinis as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
I want to acknowledge and thank Glenn Maxwell for all his efforts: Crouch
After appointing Marcus Stoinis as the Captain, Stars General Manager Blair Crouch highlighted Maxwell's contributions to the team while acknowledging his leadership over the past five seasons. For the unversed, the Australia cricketer is nursing a hamstring injury and might miss the first match of the upcoming season.
