At least four people were injured in the battle in Dr Ambedkar Nagar, in Mhow town of Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday (March 9) night after fans started celebrating India's Champions Trophy triumph by setting off firecrackers outside a mosque, officials said.

India won the title after defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final in Dubai, marking its second consecutive global victory. Nevertheless, the celebrations in Dr Ambedkar Nagar, formerly known as Mhow, turned brutal and violent, with both sides starting to engage in stone pelting. Several vehicles, shops, and motorcycles were wrecked and set on fire. Notably, the town is located approximately 200 km from Bhopal, the state capital.

"Some processions were being taken out in which some people lit firecrackers outside the masjid (mosque), after which there was a disagreement between both sides," senior police officer Hitika Vasal told reporters as per The Hindu.

As reported by local media, to control the situation, police resorted and applied to using tear gas shells. Video footage from the scenario exhibited empty streets with heavy and massive police presence, shattered glass on the roads, and scorched vehicles. Shops bore signs of wreckage, with broken windows and damage very visible and evident.

"The situation is currently under control," senior police officer Nimish Agrawal stated, adding that increased police patrols had been deployed in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.

Celebrations of cricket in India, a Hindu-majority nation with the world’s third-largest Muslim population, have sometimes led to tensions and chaos. The previous month, police in Maharashtra had to interfere in between by using force when crowds bantered and fell around each other during celebrations following India's triumph over Pakistan in the same tournament. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure peace is maintained in Dr Ambedkar Nagar.
