The much-awaited IPL 2024 mini-auction took place at the Cola Arena in Dubai today, December 19. All ten teams arrived with their strategies to bolster their squads with required players.
Mumbai Indians, led by their new captain, star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, entered the auction with an available purse of INR 17.75 CR and eight spots to fill in their squad. Their focus on acquiring fast bowlers was evident from the beginning.
Their initial purchase was Gerald Coetzee from South Africa, secured in a bidding war with Lucknow Super Giants for a price of five crores. The second addition to the squad was Dilshan Madhushanka, the left-arm fast bowler from Sri Lanka, however, before the start of the season, he was ruled out due to injury. The third buy of the day was Shreyas Gopal, a leg-spin bowler from Karnataka, acquired for just 20 lakh, with the consideration that they needed a backup leg-spin option given the experience of having Piyush Chawla in the squad.
Their fourth purchase of the day was Nuwan Thushara, another fast bowler from Sri Lanka known for his slingy bowling action, reminiscent of the great Lasith Malinga, whom MI acquired for 4.8 crores. The fifth addition to their squad was Naman Dhir, an uncapped Indian all-rounder acquired for 20 lakh. Anshul Kamboj, another uncapped Indian bowler, became their sixth acquisition of the day, also secured for 20 lakh. Their next purchase of the day was Mohammad Nabi, the Afghan all-rounder, whom they acquired at his base price of 1.5 crore.
Talking about their previous season's performance, Mumbai finished in the fourth position in the tournament with eight wins and six losses in their 14 league games. However, they were defeated by Gujarat Titans in the second qualifier. Suryakumar Yadav was the highest run-scorer for MI, amassing 605 runs in the 16 games he played. On the bowling front, veteran Piyush Chawla emerged as the highest wicket-taker for the team with 22 wickets to his name.
