Explosive Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tim David was visibly upset with the on-field umpire’s decision after a waist-high full toss was not rendered a ‘no-ball’, on which he was sent packing during the Eliminator clash of IPL 2023 against Lucknow Super Giants. Notably, the two sides squared off at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, May 24, to book a spot in Qualifier 2.
In the first innings, following the dismissals at regular intervals, Mumbai were reduced to 105/4 in under 12 overs. However, the side pinned their hopes on the lower middle order to bail them out of the peculiar situation and help attain a competitive first innings total.
During the third ball of the 17th over, Tim David seemed visibly upset with the umpires after the latter failed to deem a waist-high delivery off Yash Thakur a ‘no-ball’. Notably, Thakur bowled a high full toss outside off which appeared to be over the waist for a potential no-ball call.
David slogged it towards long-on which was comfortably pouched by Deepak Hooda. David, who believed that the delivery should have been called a no-ball, seemed dejected and headed back to the dugout for a score of 13 off 13 balls.
Mumbai Indians finish on a high with a competitive total
Notably, the five-time winners managed to post 182 runs in their stipulated 20 overs of the contest. Mumbai were handed invaluable contributions from Cameron Green (41 off 23 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav (33 off 20 balls), which did much to help MI look into the eyes of LSG bowlers.
Meanwhile, Naveen-ul-Haq recorded a four-wicket haul for 38 runs at an economy rate of 9.50 in his four overs. On the other hand, Yash Thakur too relished a fine outing as he claimed a three-wicket haul for 34 runs in his four overs.
Mumbai will look to push through during the chase and secure a berth in the Qualifier 2. Meanwhile, the IPL 2023 witnessed its first finalists as MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings booked the first spot in the summit clash, which is slated to be played on Sunday, May 28.
