The 54th match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) saw the clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, May 9. Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited RCb to bat first.
RCB skipper Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell produced a magnificent partnership as the visiting side posted 199 in 20 overs. For MI, Jason Behrendorff claimed a three-wicket haul. Meanwhile, Cameron Green, Chris Jordan, and Kumar Karthikeya took one scalp each.
During the chase, MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan produced a steady start for the hosts. However, Wanindu Hasaranga provided RCB with two major breakthroughs, dismissing the MI openers in the same over. Hasaranga first picked the wicket of keeper-batter Ishan Kishan (42 off 21) when the batter edged the ball to wicketkeeper Anuj Rawat.
Rohit, on the other hand, was dismissed for just seven runs when Hasaranga trapped him LBW. Notably, it was initially given not-out by the umpire but TV replay confirmed that the ball was knocking the stump. And during the same time, Rohit's reaction went viral on social media.
Rohit Sharma has been struggling with the bat from the start of the ongoing IPL edition. His highest score in the IPL 2023 was 65 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in which MI won by six wickets. For his match-winning knock, he subsequently won the Player of the Match as well.
The India skipper has scored only 191 runs from 11 matches at an average of 17.36 and a strike rate of 124.84. In MI's last five matches, Rohit has only had single-digit scores, including two ducks.
