Veteran India spinner Piyush Chawla has been very impressive for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing IPL season. Chawla has picked 13 wickets from nine matches already. He is currently fourth on the IPL 2023 Purple Cap list.
MI roped in Chawla at the IPL 2023 mini-auction after they were in need of an experienced spinner. The need arose after Murugan Ashwin and Mayank Markande failed to capitalise on their opportunities last season.
Notably, the Rohit Sharma-led side finished at the bottom of the points table due to their dismal performance in the previous edition. However, Chawla is having a good spell with the ball, so their acquisition has been fruitful so far.
Chawla has been fairly economical for MI this season and chipped in with crucial wickets time and again for the five-time champions. Meanwhile, he remained unsold ahead of the 2022 edition. Chawla was bought by MI for just INR 50 lakh at the mini-auction in December 2022 and is proving to be a steal buy for them.
RR set 213-run target for MI in 1000th IPL match
The IPL 2023 match between MI and Rajasthan Royals (RR) marked the 1000th match in the cash-rich league. RR skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and opted to bat first at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. RR scored 212 runs in 20 overs, courtesy of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's century. He scored 124 off 62, including 16 boundaries and eight maximums.
Piyush Chawla, who has been in excellent form so far this season, struck twice for the five-time IPL champions. He provided the Rohit Sharma-led side with a massive breakthrough, dismissing opener Jos Buttler for 18 runs. He then dismissed Devdutt Padikkal. Moreover, the 34-year-old conceded just 34 runs in his four-over spell.
