Michael Slater collapses in court after refused bail over domestic violence allegations
Slater applied for bail as he has spent the last few days in the Maroochydore police watch house since his arrest at the weekend.
Former Australian cricket great Michael Slater has found himself amidst controversy due to an alleged domestic violence incident. The 54-year-old recently collapsed in court after he failed in his bid for freedom in the same case.
Slater applied for bail as he spent the last few days in the Maroochydore police watch house since his arrest at the weekend. It is also worth noting that some of the alleged acts were caught on CCTV cameras at the victim’s property, including his repeated alleged verbal abuse—screaming obscenities and abuse—before smashing his way into the home.
After hearing of his rejected bail, Slater placed his head in his hands and then collapsed while being led back to the cells by Correctional Services staff. Furthermore, the former Aussie cricketer is facing a plethora of charges, which include entering a dwelling with intent to break at night, choking, assault occasioning bodily harm, stalking, and breaching bail.
Interestingly, Legal Aid Solicitor Michael Robinson told the court recently that Slater planned on staying in a rehab facility in Sydney if released from custody. Furthermore, a letter to the court by Slater’s doctor stated that he acted in an “impulsive, reckless and uncharacteristic manner”.
“There’s documented evidence in front of the court that shows he’ll be out of the court’s jurisdiction, in a mental rehab facility, basically doing something about addressing the (alleged) behaviour,” Robinson was quoted as saying by news.com.au.
The bail was rejected after the court decided that Slater was at risk of committing the crimes again if it was granted. In the CCTV clip, Slater can be seen hurling abuse, asking the complainant to open the door. He is then seen smashing a window and then allegedly assaulting her.
“She’s pleading with him to stop repeatedly, she’s in a state of undress, cowering, clearly scared for her safety, we say the strength of the evidence is good,” Sergeant Newman told the court.
