Former India batter Murali Vijay has recalled the time when former cricketer Virender Sehwag cautioned him in a series, stating it might be the last of his career. Vijay said that Sehwag's statement came at a time when he felt at his peak and believed in his ability to achieve many more milestones. However, the destiny had other plans.
Vijay recalled his fellow opener's words and said that it pumped him up to play one of the most memorable knocks of his career.
“I definitely felt that (turning point of career) when I scored my hundred in Hyderabad for my comeback - it was 2012 if I am not wrong, I don’t know the exact year but around that time, when Virender Sehwag and myself were opening, I had this hint," said Vijay in a recent interview with former India women's cricket coach WV Raman on his show 'Wednesday with WV Raman' for Sportstar.
"He came to my saying ‘This might be your last Test series’. And I felt Hyderabad innings was something pure out and above," he added.
I had the confidence to perform anywhere in the world: Murali Vijay
Even after so many years, Vijay fondly looked back at the Hyderabad Test, acknowledging how it all changed after that innings against Australia.
"I never thought I would be having so much patience and play there. And that knock gave me the faith and belief that I can perform anywhere. The situation of my personal life and cricket hit me together. After that I never looked back. I completely had the confidence to go and perform anywhere in the world. Trent Bridge was one of the best knocks I have played," he added.
Vijay's career may have been short-lived, but he is remembered for his contribution when the team was undergoing transition with many senior players retiring and a new bunch of youngsters coming into the tea. He was an essential part of the team during that time and his performances were a testament to his talent and dedication.
