MI's biggest problem in IPL since last season till date has been the lack of partnerships: Sunil Gavaskar
Mumbai Indians are yet to win any of their matches so far in IPL 2023.
The five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are yet to win their first match in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023. Up next, they will face Delhi Capitals on Tuesday, April 11 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi and ahead of that, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar pointed out the Rohit Sharma-led side’s biggest problem in the ongoing season.
The 73-year-old believes that Mumbai are not being able to win any match because they are struggling with the bat. He reckons that the team needs to focus more on building partnerships as that is the only way to put a massive total on board. The former cricketer also added that openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan should take more responsibility and give the team a perfect start but that hasn’t been the case so far.
“MI's biggest problem since last season till date has been the lack of partnerships. Unless you have big partnerships, it is difficult for you to score big. MI has been seen struggling continuously in this regard. MI should have built their innings on short but useful partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, but they failed,” Gavaskar said while talking to Star Sports.
MI look to get their first win of IPL 2023
Meanwhile, Mumbai’s campaign has also been hampered because of multiple injuries. Ace pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Jhye Richardson got ruled out ahead of the 16th edition while Jofra Archer may not play all the matches to manage his workload. The franchise has signed Sandeep Warrier and Riley Meredith as Bumrah and Richardson’s replacements respectively but they are yet to feature in a game.
Notably, they spent INR 17.50 crore to sign Australia international Cameron Green in the auction but he is yet to show his class in the cash-rich league. Thus, the problems are plenty for Mumbai at the moment but they have been in a similar situation before and thus, one can expect a strong comeback from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Against Delhi, they have a good chance as the home side has failed to win any of their three matches so far in the competition.
