Mohammad Shahzad should have been picked in T20 World Cup 2022: Asghar Afghan
Afghanistan are on their way home as they lost to Australia in the recent T20 World Cup game.
Australia narrowly won their fixture against Afghanistan by just four runs owing to the final over scare produced by Rashid Khan in the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan opined that the side could have gone past the line had they picked veteran lad Mohammad Shahzad in the side.
The Mohammad Nabi-led side gave a tough fight to the defending champions, not allowing the opponents to breathe in the match, taking it till the very end. However, according to Asghar Afghan, experience plays a big role in scenarios like these and Shahzad’s attacking prowess could have helped the side win the match.
“Gulbadin is an experienced player, he usually takes the match till the end, but we have had experienced lads like Mohammad Shahzad who could have changed the game. If we had Shahzad, the result probably would have been different. You need to have 4-5 experienced players in the side. Gulbadin understands the game and knows when to strike but unfortunately, he was run out. After he got out, then Ibrahim got out then we knew Najib would make a mistake by targeting the bowlers instead of taking the match till the end, and he did,” said Asghar on 'BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' on CricTracker.
Asghar Afghan wants team to understand the game
The former captain made noteworthy statements for the side as he further said that the side will need to read the game well and act accordingly. He also reiterated that experience comes in handy in such a scenario like the one against Australia.
“The team and the players need to understand the requirements of the game. Till the time we do not understand this, we might get the match close but never win. Like in this match, the ball was coming onto the bat well, an experienced player in the side would have helped a lot. So, you’ll get the match very close but eventually lose it,” added Asghar.
