MS Dhoni likely to help BCCI convince Stephen Fleming's onboarding as India head coach

Since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opened applications for the Indian cricket team's head coach role, several names have been speculated as suitable candidates for the coveted position.

Legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni, who also mentored the Indian team during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, could become a crucial factor in the decision-making process.

According to reports, the BCCI's initial choice to replace Dravid was Stephen Fleming, the highly successful Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach in the IPL. However, the Kiwi coach has expressed hesitation to commit until 2027 due to his involvement with multiple T20 franchises worldwide.

Despite the BCCI's ongoing discussions with other candidates like Justin Langer, Gautam Gambhir, and Mahela Jayawardene, the board remains keen on persuading the former New Zealand cricketer.

“Fleming hasn't said no. He has expressed his concerns about the tenure of the contract, which is nothing unusual. Even Rahul Dravid wasn't keen in the beginning. He was persuaded. It shouldn't be a surprise if the same thing happens with Fleming. And who better than MS Dhoni to do the job?” a BCCI source told Hindustan Times.

Fleming has been part of IPL since 2008 and knows how to win trophies, which could be valuable for the Indian team. “Opening channels with Dhoni during the IPL was not the right thing to do, but now it may be worth a shot,” the source added.

The former CSK skipper, who led the franchise to five IPL trophies under Fleming's guidance, could play a crucial role in convincing the New Zealander to assume the position as India head coach up until December 2027. The Ranchi-born has a vast experience of leading the Men in Blue to three ICC titles and has a deep understanding of the requirement and dynamics that would benefit their future growth and success.
