The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) announced the Indian team’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 on April 30. The marquee event is set to be held in the USA and the West Indies from June 2.
There were many stars present in India’s squad for the World Cup, and one of the most notable inclusions was that of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The 33-year-old was included in the squad on the back of his brilliant performances in the IPL 2024.
Talking about his selection, Chahal opined that being selected in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup is his "biggest achievement" to date. He added that everyone plays domestic cricket to be selected for India.
"For the World Cup, we play IPL, domestic cricket to get into the Indian team and that is my biggest achievement, I think I played there (West Indies) last July, but when I was out of the Indian team. I played domestic T20s and cricket keeps going on,” Chahal was quoted as saying by IndiaToday.
It is worth noting that Chahal last played a T20I for India during their tour of the West Indies and the USA in July 2023. Chahal picked up five wickets in five matches on the tour of the West Indies, but despite his performance, he was dropped from the side. He was dropped the T20I series against Afghanistan earlier in the year.
"I think I played there (West Indies) last July, but when I was out of the Indian team. I played domestic T20s and cricket keeps going on," Chahal added.
The veteran spinner recently became the first bowler to take 200 wickets in the IPL, and with 13 wickets in nine IPL 2024 games, Chahal is one of the highest wicket-takers of the tournament currently. It was this form that enabled him to make the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.
