Following New Zealand's debacle in the T20 World Cup 2024 where the then-skipper, Kane Williamson, turned down a fresh central contract offered by New Zealand Cricket, widespread discussions ensued regarding his prioritization of personal financial gain over national interests. This led to criticism from some quarters. However, Williamson's most recent revelation resonated deeply throughout the cricketing community.
Speaking to reporters upon arrival in Auckland, he expressed his keenness to continue participating for the BlackCaps for as long as he remains physically and mentally capable. The 33-year-old emphasized his deep affection for captaining the team (206 games across all formats) and representing New Zealand, describing it as a privilege and honour that he has cherished for numerous years. Additionally, he conveyed that any role within the team would be immensely fulfilling for him, and he desired to remain part of the Kiwi's cricketing community for as long as he could contribute effectively and meaningfully.
"My priority still is absolutely playing for New Zealand. I want to play as long as I can, I love playing for New Zealand. I've really enjoyed my time captaining and it's been a privilege and an honour to do that for a number of years. Being a part of this team is so dear to me and I want to remain in that community for as long as I can, as long as I'm offering and adding value," stated Williamson, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
It looks like an amazing competition: Williamson on the SA20
Following in the footsteps of speedster Trent Boult, who opted out of his national contract a couple of years ago to pursue opportunities in the franchise cricket circuit worldwide, Williamson intends to prioritize his commitments to the national team. Boult has since represented New Zealand in major tournaments and ICC events exclusively. On the other hand, Williamson plans on participating in most fixtures, with the exception of next year's January window, during which he aims to join the SA20's third season. Expressing his enthusiasm for this opportunity, Williamson eagerly anticipated participating in the SA20, considering it (South Africa) an excellent venue for playing cricket.

"It (SA20) looks like an amazing competition. There's a number of great competitions on during that time but that one looks really exciting. It's a wonderful place to go and play. It's something a little bit different," added Williamson.
