The deadline to submit an application for the post of India's senior men's selection committee closed on Monday (November 28). According to a report, Nayan Mongia, Maninder Singh, Shiv Sunder Das, Hemang Badani, and Ajay Ratra are among the several who have applied for India's selector post. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now likely to appoint a Cricket Advisory Committee to conduct interviews before announcing their decision.
After India's embarrassing exit at the T20 World Cup 2022 and 2022 Asia Cup, the BCCI sacked the entire senior men's selection committee panel, including chief selector Chetan Sharma, on November 18 and quickly invited applications for the position of national selectors on the same day.
The Chetan Sharma-led panel will remain in place till the announcement of new selectors. Its members are currently scouting the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 and Cooch Behar Trophy according to ESPNCricinfo. The first assignment for the new selection committee will be selecting a squad for India's 2023 white-ball series against Sri Lanka at home.
Nayan Mongia applies but Ajit Agarkar skips
Shiv Sunder Das is currently with the Punjab cricket team as a batting coach and had stints with National Cricket Academy and the Indian Women's team as a batting coach. Hemang Badani, who worked with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL, is yet to confirm or deny but remains a strong candidate for the selector's post.
Nayan Mongia will be among the senior-most candidate in the race who has played 44 Tests and 140 ODI matches for India. He has already been a part of the selection committee for the Baroda team in both senior and junior levels. The iconic former cricketer Ajit Agarkar is another high-profile name that was linked for a job but the player decided to not apply.
However, the three members of the current selection committee, including Chetan Sharma, can reapply for their jobs as well. It has been reported that Sunil Joshi will not be contesting and Sharma and Harvinder Singh are yet to confirm or deny their position on reapplying.
