‘No one deserves a chance unless..’ - Ricky Ponting opines on Glenn Maxwell’s Test prospects
Maxwell has just played 7 Test matches for Australia, scoring 339 runs in total.
Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting came forward to reflect on Glenn Maxwell’s chances of playing Test cricket for the Australian team. Ponting even went on to state that Maxwell does not deserve to play Tests for Australia.
The star all-rounder was a crucial part of Australia’s World Cup-winning campaign but was not selected for the side’s ongoing three-game Test series against Pakistan. It is worth noting that Maxwell last played a Test for Australia in 2017.
In an interview, Ponting highlighted the importance of scoring many first-class runs before a player can be selected for Test cricket. Maxwell has played only seven Tests for the Aussies where he has amassed 339 runs to his name.
"No one deserves a chance unless you’ve got a truckload of first-class runs behind you. I’m a no, he doesn’t deserve it. But if he gets a chance to go back and make some first-class runs then he can force his way back in," Ponting said on Channel 7.
I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side: Maxwell
However, Glenn Maxwell seems to quite understand the competition in the Test side. Before the series against Pakistan, Maxwell stated that Australia are playing world class cricket and are the defending champions of the World Test Championship.
"I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025," Maxwell told SEN Radio.
"So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage. There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour, I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side," Maxwell added.
