Northamptonshire County Cricket Club has announced the appointment of former Australia coach Darren Lehmann as their new head coach on a two-year contract. The 54-year-old will take charge at Wantage Road starting in February 2025.

Lehmann's appointment comes following John Sadler's departure in September 2023, after the club's Vitality Blast quarter-final exit. Despite a challenging season that saw Northants struggle initially in the County Championship, the team secured a fourth-place finish in Division Two.

The former's impressive CV includes coaching the Australian national team to their memorable 2013-14 Ashes victory and leading Brisbane Heat to the Big Bash League title in 2012-13. His recent role as assistant coach contributed to Brisbane Heat's 2023-24 title victory.

Lehmann has had prior experience in English cricket, including a successful playing career with Yorkshire and a coaching stint with Northern Superchargers in the Hundred. Lehmann opened up about joining the historic club.

"Northamptonshire has a great history in our game and I am looking forward to meeting the players and learning about the club and its past and creating our history over the coming months and years," Lehmann said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

I am delighted we have been able to secure a new head coach: Ray Payne

Lehmann, who had previously stepped back from his coaching commitments following a heart attack in 2020 will complete his commentary duties with ABC during the Australian summer before joining Northamptonshire. CEO Ray Payne mentioned about the importance of this appointment.

"I am delighted we have been able to secure a new head coach with the history, reputation, skills and knowledge that Darren possesses. It is a real marker in the ground and demonstrates once again, the clubs desire to achieve to its highest level on the field. From our first conversation with Darren it was clear to see his passion and excitement for the opportunity and his coaching philosophy is something that aligns well with the goals of the club," Payne said.
