Former England opener Marcus Trescothick, who will be serving as Three Lions' interim head coach for the white-ball series against Australia at home next month, asserted that he is yet to decide whether he wants to take up the role on a full-time basis.

Trescothick is the batting coach of the England Test team, which is currently playing the first of a three-match series at home against Sri Lanka. He will be taking an early exit from the Test squad during the third Test at the Kennington Oval to join England's white-ball setup. Jos Buttler and Co. are set to play three T20Is and five ODIs against arch-rivals Australia and the matches will run from September 11 to 29.

After England failed to defend the ODI World Cup (in 2023) and the T20 World Cup (in 2024), Matthew Mott stepped down as the white-ball head coach last month. Since his departure, several former players and established coaches have been linked with the prestigious job. However, Trescothick is yet to throw his hat in the ring as he is not looking beyond the Australia series.

"It is not something I had ever thought about before until I got this opportunity now. I am not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I have been very much focused on the job we are doing here [with the Test team]," Trescothick was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

I am looking forward to the opportunity, really excited about doing the job: Trescothick

Besides, the 48-year-old seemed excited about the prospects of getting involved with the Three Lions in their coaching setup for the upcoming away tours. Notably, Marcus Trescothick has been a part of England's coaching setup since early 2021 and could be a good choice as the permanent white-ball coach, given his experience of working with the players in the circuit.

"You plan your winter: we are off to Pakistan, then New Zealand. I am so ingrained in that at the moment, I have not really sat down and said, 'Right, this is where I will try to go, this is what I will try to do'. I am looking forward to the opportunity, for sure. I am really excited about doing the job. We will work it out a little bit more from there," he added.
