‘Nothing wrong with what Gambhir has said’ - Sourav Ganguly defends India head coach following comments on Ricky Ponting
"Australians, from the time I have watched cricket, they have been tough for you. They have played their cricket that way, whether it was Waugh, Ponting or Hayden," Ganguly said.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir recently called out Ricky Ponting for his comments on Virat Kohli. The former Australia cricketer raised concerns about Kohli’s form in Test cricket and reminded that the cricketer has hit only two (three) centuries in red-ball cricket in the last five years. Gambhir didn’t like his comments and before flying to Down Under, the 43-year-old asked Ponting to focus on Australian cricket instead.
Gambhir’s comments didn’t go well as many former cricketers, including Adam Gilchrist, who condemned it. However, he had the support of Sourav Ganguly, who stated that the former cricketer did nothing wrong. He also defended Gambhir after the 3-0 series defeat to New Zealand. The former cricketer mentioned that Gambhir is still new to the job and should be given time.
“All I will say is let him be. I saw some criticism on what he said in the press conference. It is the way he is. Let him be. When he won the IPL, he was the same, you were going gaga over him. Just because he has lost three test matches and a one-day series against Sri Lanka, the straight talk has not been looked at nicely. But that is the way he is,” Ganguly told Revzsports.

Ganguly also reminded that Australian cricketers have always been tough on opponents and supported Gambhir for his comments.
“And why not? Australians, from the time I have watched cricket, they have been tough for you. They have played their cricket that way, whether it was (Steve) Waugh, Ponting or (Matthew) Hayden. So, there is nothing wrong with what Gambhir has said. That is the way he is, and he fights, he competes, so let us give him a chance. It has just been two-three months, and you are passing a judgement on him,” he added.
