NZ vs AUS: Nathan Lyon breaks a unique batting record in Wellington

In the first Test against New Zealand at Wellington, Australian veteran spinner Nathan Lyon not only showcased his exceptional bowling skills but also registered his name in the record books with a unique batting feat. Lyon became the player with the most Test runs without scoring a single half-century, surpassing the likes of Kemar Roach and Waqar Younis.

During day two of the match, Lyon stepped up as a nightwatchman following the dismissals of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. He showcased his batting skills, scoring a brisk 41 off 46 balls, including six boundaries, at an impressive strike rate of over 89. This innings took Lyon's total Test runs to 1,501 in 128 Tests and 162 innings, with a best score of 47 and an average of 12.72.

Nathon Lyon shows his batting skills

Lyon's batting record is truly unique, as he now holds the record of scoring the most Test runs without a single half-century. Following him on this list is West Indies pacer Kemar Roach, who has scored 1,174 runs in 81 Tests at an average of 11.50, with a best score of 41. Pakistani pace legend Waqar Younis occupies the third spot, having scored 1,010 runs in 87 Tests at an average of 10.20, with a best score of 45.

Apart from his batting exploits, Lyon's primary role as a spinner continues to shine. Recently, he became the third Australian bowler to pick up 500 Test wickets, joining the elite company of Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath. In the first innings of the Wellington Test, Lyon was the pick of the bowlers for the Aussies, claiming four wickets for 43 runs, helping to bundle out the Kiwis for 179.

Lyon has already picked up two wickets in the second innings, he got the wickets of opener Tom Latham and in-form batter, Kane Williamson. New Zealand need 258 more runs to win the Test match and stumps were called on 111 runs for the loss of three wickets.
