Following their loss to South Africa, their fourth in six matches at this World Cup, Pakistan currently sit at the sixth spot in the points table, tallying just four points. Their forthcoming fixtures pit them against Bangladesh, New Zealand and England, with their qualification chances hanging by a thread.

The upcoming matches will be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and Bengaluru. With three games left, Pakistan still have a shot at clinching five victories in all, accruing ten points. However, their fate hinges on a series of favorable outcomes in other matches to secure a coveted spot in the tournament. Here is a scenario:

If India and South Africa remain on top of the table

If India and South Africa secure victories in their remaining matches, they will accumulate either eight or seven wins, depending on the outcome of their clash in Kolkata. This would position them at the top of the points table. New Zealand, on the other hand, must face four consecutive losses, leaving them with only four wins and eight points.

If Australia lose their remaining three matches

Australia will also finish with eight points if they beat New Zealand and then lose their remaining three matches against England, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are each having two wins currently and should not surpass two more wins to reach eight points.

England and Bangladesh shouldn’t reach ten points

In this scenario, with New Zealand, Australia, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka all ending up with eight points, Pakistan's road to the No.3 spot would become clear as they would stand at ten points. However, this is assuming that England, Bangladesh, or Netherlands also don't reach ten points by winning all their remaining matches.

It is worth noting that teams could potentially secure a top-four spot with just four wins and eight points mathematically. This means that Pakistan and England might still afford to lose one more game and remain in contention for the semi-finals.
