Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede etched his name in record books as he became just the fifth player in ODI history to score a hundred and pick a five-wicket haul in the same match. The 23-year-old picked up 5/52 in the all-important game in the ODI World Cup qualifiers against Scotland to restrict the opposition to 277/9 in 50 overs.

He later scored a scintillating 123 off just 92 balls with the help of seven fours and five sixes to help his side chase down the target in 42.5 overs. Courtesy of the win, the Netherlands qualified for the ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled in India from October 5. It will be their first appearance in the mega event after the 2011 World Cup.

Following his sensational performance, an image of de Leede’s celebration after taking a wicket has been doing rounds on the internet. In the image, de Leede could be seen kissing the ball like his father Tim de Leede did during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.

Notably, Tim de Leede played in three ODI World Cups for the Netherlands in 1996, 2003 and 2007. He scored 400 runs and picked 29 wickets in his 29-match ODI career. His most memorable performance came against India in the 2003 World Cup where he picked 4/35 in 9.5 overs to restrict India to just 204 in their opening game. His four-fer included the prized scalp of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. Despite, the Netherlands losing the game by 68 runs, de Leede was awarded Player of the Match for his magnificent spell.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands will next lock horns in the final of the Qualifiers against Sri Lanka on Sunday, July 9 at Harare Sports Club. Both teams have already confirmed their berth for the World Cup and will be looking to end the tournament on a high.
