India continued their winning run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat Afghanistan by eight wickets on Wednesday, October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Captain Rohit Sharma starred with the bat as he broke several records during his scintillating knock of 131 off 84 balls with the help of 16 fours and five sixes.
The Indian skipper registered the fastest hundred in ODI World Cup by an Indian (63 balls), most hundreds in the history of ODI World Cup (7), most sixes in international cricket (556) and also became the joint-fastest batter to complete 1000 runs in ODI World Cup. Furthermore, Rohit also registered his 31st ODI hundred and rose to third spot in list of most centuries in ODIs surpassing Ricky Ponting (30 hundreds).
Apart from him, Ishan Kishan (47 off 47) and Virat Kohli (55* off 56) also made valuable contributions as India chased down the target of 273 in 35 overs. Rohit was deservedly adjudged Player of the Match for his record-shattering innings.

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and elected to bat first. However, his openers failed to vindicate his decision as they were left reeling at 63/3 after 13.1 overs. Seeing his team in trouble, captain Shahidi (80 off 88) got involved in a massive 121-run partnership off 127 balls for the fourth wicket with Azmatullah Omarzai (62 off 69).
Jasprit Bumrah scalped 4-fer in the first innings
Courtesy of their massive partnership and some contribution from the lower order, Afghanistan managed to reach the total of 272/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball for India as he registered figures of 4/49 in ten overs while Hardik Pandya also picked up 2/43 in his seven-over spell.
Following their massive win, India rose to the second spot in the ODI World Cup 2023 points table with four points from two matches and net run rate of +1.500. The Rohit Sharma-led side will next face arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday, October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
On the other hand, Afghanistan find themselves at the bottom of the points table with zero points from two matches having a net run rate of -1.907. They will next lock horns with England on October 15 at the same venue.
