As South Africa defeated Pakistan in game 26 of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, there were a lot of moments that came to the forefront and were branded as controversial. The same was the case when star batter Aiden Markram was not given out after walking well out of the crease.
A short ball from Haris Rauf missed Markram and landed with a bounce straight into the hands of wicketkeeper Mohammed Rizwan. Bowing his head towards the ground and grinning, Markram made sure to tap his foot in the crease and walk up the pitch.
At the same moment, Rizwan under-armed the ball back towards the direction of both the wickets and Rauf, and when the ball struck the stumps, Markram was well out of his ground.
However, the ace batter was not given out, as there was no appeal made by the Pakistan team. Furthermore, there were doubts over whether the fielding side believed the ball to be in play or not. The ball would have been considered dead, and Markram would have been safe nonetheless.
Aiden Markram’s knock ensured South Africa's winning run in ODI World Cup 2023
Talking of Aiden Markram’s performance, the ace South African batter ensured that his side came out victorious in the ODI World Cup 2023 league stage clash. Aiming to chase down a total of 272 runs, the Proteas’ opener failed to go big. Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, and Rassie van der Dussen put in subpar knocks chasing the total.
After the top-order’s lacklustre knocks, it was the knock of Aiden Markram that stabilised the innings for the Proteas. Furthermore, David Miller scored 29 runs with Jansen adding 20 runs on the board and Keshav Maharaj hitting the winning runs, South Africa jumped atop the points table.
