Pat Cummins is considering extending his tenure as Australia's ODI captain after the current World Cup campaign, following a successful seven-game winning streak that has led the team to the semi-finals.

Initially stepping into the captaincy role with a focus on the ongoing World Cup, Cummins is now contemplating the possibility of continuing in the position. Aaron Finch's sudden retirement last year created uncertainty in leadership, but Cummins has effectively led the team through challenges, sparking discussions about his future as captain.

"We've been pretty open, me and Andrew and George around different times in the year you're going to have different priorities.

"I feel like I've been managed really well and looked after in a really, really busy year where you don't really want to give up any cricket," Cummins stated as quoted by cricket.com.au, highlighting the need for flexibility in managing cricket commitments.

As Cummins prepares for the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, he aims to regain his T20 form and secure a spot in the squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. His decision to declare for the IPL auction demonstrates his dedication to improving his skills in the shortest format of the game.

"I'm probably going to go into the IPL auction for next year to try to get some games before that World Cup and push a case to not only make the side but get back to how I feel like I can bowl in T20 cricket," Cummins said, recognising the importance of match practice ahead of the global T20 event.

While Cummins considers his role in the shorter format, the T20 World Cup captaincy remains uncertain, with Mitch Marsh emerging as a strong contender based on his recent performance. Cummins, however, remains hopeful about his participation, stating, “Marshy did a fantastic job in South Africa, so we'll wait and see. Hopefully playing in it. Captaining, I don't really know."

As discussions continue, coach Andrew McDonald and selection chief George Bailey will play crucial roles in determining the future of Australia's ODI captaincy.
