The Indian Premier League 2023 served fans with another action-packed game as Punjab Kings took on Lucknow Super Giants in Match 38 on Friday, April 28 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Punjab captain Shikhar Dhawan won the toss on his return after three matches and invited LSG to bat first.
Little did Dhawan know that the decision will backfire big time as LSG openers, captain KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers, added 41 runs for the first wicket off just 20 balls. After Rahul got out in the fourth over against Kagiso Rabada, Mayers continued the attack and brought up his half-century off just 20 balls. He ended up scoring 54 off 24 balls, smashing seven fours and four sixes in his innings before getting out to Rabada in the sixth over.
Following his dismissal, Ayush Badoni (43 off 24), Marcus Stoinis (72 off 40) and Nicholas Pooran (45 off 19) continued the onslaught and helped their side post the second-highest team total in IPL history, finishing on 257/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab as he picked up 2/52 in four overs while Rahul Chahar bowled an economical spell of 0/29 in four overs.
Punjab couldn't keep up with the required rate in the second innings
In reply, Punjab got off to a disappointing start as they lost their captain Shikhar Dhawan in the first over itself, who fell prey to Marcus Stoinis. Punjab got their second blow as Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed Prabhsimran Singh in the fourth over. After the two early wickets, Atharva Taide (66 off 36) and Sikandar Raza (36 off 22) added 78 runs for the third wicket off 47 balls to keep their side in the hunt.
However, after their dismissals in back-to-back overs, other batters couldn't keep up with the required run rate and were bundled out for 201 in the second innings. Yash Thakur (4/37 in 3.5 overs) and Naveen-ul-Haq (3/30 in four overs) were the pick of the bowlers for LSG in their 56-run victory.
