‘People were saying my career is over’ - Jasprit Bumrah’s befitting reply to critics after Pakistan win

Star India pacer Jasprit Bumrah didn’t mince his words after delivering a match-winning spell against Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The 30-year-old was out injured for the majority part of the last two years and during which, a lot of former cricketers and experts stated that Bumrah might not return at his best and that his career might be over.

In reality, he has been exceptional since his return. Bumrah was phenomenal in the Asia Cup and also in the ODI World Cup, in which India qualified for the final. He was ruthless in the five-match Test series against England at home while in the ongoing T20 World Cup, he has bagged Player of the Match title in both the matches India played so far. Against Pakistan, Bumrah gave away just 14 runs in his four overs and picked three crucial wickets - Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmad.

After his match-winning performance, Bumrah hit back at critics and mentioned that some believed that his career was over but he is happy to prove them wrong. He also analysed the tricky conditions of Nassau County International Cricket Stadium and mentioned that he was trying to bowl to the best of his ability and was trying to solve the puzzles that the surface offered.

“See a year ago, the same people were saying that I might not play again and my career is over and then now the question changed,” Bumrah said in the post-match press conference.

“I am not looking at whether I am bowling at the best of my ability. I try to solve the problem that is there in front of me. I know it's a cliched answer... but I was trying to focus on what is the best option over here on a wicket like this,” he added. 

India got closer to the Super 8 spot with their six-run victory over Pakistan in New York. The Rohit Sharma-led side will next face USA, followed by Canada. A win in either match would cement their place in the next round.
