After India's stunning victory in the first Test against Australia in Perth, many Aussie fans questioned the legality of Jasprit Bumrah's bowling action. Former India coach, Greg Chappell, came up with a defence for the Indian fast bowler.
In the series opener, where the visitors secured a historic 295-run victory against Australia, their largest-ever Test win on Australian soil. This win was spearheaded by Bumrah's extraordinary performance, in which he claimed eight wickets across the match and led the team as stand-in captain in Rohit Sharma's absence. Meanwhile, Chappell directly challenges those questioning Bumrah's bowling technique.
"Yet it was Australia's batting performance that was more concerning. India's bowlers, spearheaded by the lethal Jasprit Bumrah, looked sharper and more menacing. By the way, please stop this nonsense of questioning Bumrah's actions. It is unique, but it is unequivocally clean. It demeans a champion performer and the game to even bring it up. The top order is a major concern. To avoid forced changes, they must deliver in Adelaide," Chappell wrote in his column in The Sydney Morning Herald.
Jaiswal is fearless and appears to inherit the mantle of Indian batting excellence: Greg Chappell
In the match, despite being bowled out for just 150 in the first innings, India's bowlers, led by their skipper, restricted the hosts to 104 runs. The turning point came with remarkable performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul who performed brilliantly with the bat to post a huge target.
Chappell also heaped huge praise for the young Jaiswal, describing him as an emerging superstar who is set to register his name in Indian batting excellence from legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
"The pitch, too, evolved, becoming less treacherous. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul capitalised, making the Australian bowlers look ordinary. Rahul's quality is well-known, but Jaiswal is an emerging superstar. The young opener is fearless and appears poised to inherit the mantle of Indian batting excellence, following the likes of Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar," he wrote.
With India now leading the series, the cricket action will now move to Adelaide for the Pink-ball Test where India will be led by their full-time skipper Rohit Sharma. Ahead of the second Test which is set to begin on December 06, the tourists will play a Tour Match in Canberra against the Prime Minister's XI.
