Praveen Jayawickrama banned by International Cricket Council for one year
The left-arm spinner was charged by the ICC for breaching three counts of the anti-corruption code.
Almost a couple of months since the International Cricket Council (ICC) charged Sri Lanka left-arm spinner, Praveen Jayawickrama, for breaching three counts of the anti-corruption code relating to corrupt approaches in international matches as well as the Lanka Premier League. As a result, the governing body has banned him from all forms of cricket for an entire year.
Jayawickrama admitted to infringing the anti-corruption code. In light of the admission, the 26-year-old, who celebrated his birthday a couple of days back, has undertaken a sanction of a period of one year upon himself, of which the final half-a-year is suspended. The charges are in relation to international cricket and the Lanka Premier League. In agreement with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the ICC acted in accordance with Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code.
Following are the provisions under which the Sri Lankan was booked by the apex cricket governing body:
Article 2.4.7 – Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU, including concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and/or that may be evidence or may lead to the discovery of evidence of corrupt conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code.
Article 1.7.4.1 - If the alleged Corrupt Conduct relates to one or more International Matches and one or more Domestic Matches, the ICC and the relevant National Cricket Federation(s) shall agree between them which of them shall take action (and, where applicable, in which order) against any relevant Participant for such Corrupt Conduct and, in the absence of agreement, the ICC shall take action solely with respect to Corrupt Conduct relating to the relevant International Matches and the National Cricket Federation(s) shall take action solely with respect to Corrupt Conduct relating to the relevant Domestic Matches.
Article 1.8.1 - The ICC to take action under the Anti-Corruption Code in relation to any Corrupt Conduct
relating to one or more Domestic Matches and one or more International Matches, then all
references in the Anti-Corruption Code to ‘International Match’ shall be deemed to be
extended to include the relevant ‘Domestic Match’.
Jayawickrama featured in 15 international games up until now
Meanwhile, speaking of the left-arm spinner Jayawickrama made his international debut in 2021, and played five games of each format. His debut Test saw him clinch an 11-for in the game against Bangladesh at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
