Youngster Prithvi Shaw was in sublime form in domestic cricket last season and courtesy of which, he also got a call-up in the national T20I side against New Zealand. Thus, given his form, one expected him to live up to his potential in the ongoing IPL 2023 season, but that hasn’t been the case so far. More so, the Delhi franchise is using the opener as an Impact Player and that has been very surprising to former India cricketer Ravi Shastri.

The 60-year-old believes that it is not a good sign for a young cricketer and eventually asked Shaw to be in the mix and not just come out to bat when required. Shastri expects better things from the 23-year-old but unfortunately, things are not looking good for him at the moment.

“I think a player of his quality and age, he wants to be in the thick of things all the time. He should want to and not say I'm happy to be an Imapct Player. It's not a good sign and it won't help. I mean he is young. You want him to be part of everything, to be in the mix and contribute with a catch to through fielding, get into good habits there rather than being in the habit of - I'm only going to bat and then feet up in the dressing room. That is not good for a guy at his age,” Shastri said ahead of Delhi’s match against Mumbai as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Delhi suffered their fourth straight defeat in IPL 2023

Against Mumbai Indians, Shaw started well as he scored 15 runs off 10 deliveries but once again failed to make the most of his start. Meanwhile, Delhi’s middle order once again failed to up a show as David Warner and Axar Patel’s valuable knock helped the franchise post 172 runs on board.

While chasing, skipper Rohit Sharma gave MI a perfect start but with a couple of quick wickets, the complexion of the game completely changed. Nevertheless, Tim David and Cameron Green managed to stay calm under pressure and helped MI beat DC by six wickets. With that, the five-time champions are now placed eighth in the IPL Points table.
