The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced prize money of INR 125 crore after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024. The prize money was handed to skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid during the gala celebration at Wankhede Stadium on June 4.

According to reports, all 15 members of the squad will receive INR 5 crore each. Head coach Dravid too will receive the same amount while the rest of the coaching group will earn INR 2.5 each. The backroom staff, which includes the video production team will get INR 2 crore each while the selection committee led by former cricketer Ajit Agarkar will be given INR 1 crore each. BCCI also decided to reward the reserve players like Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan with INR 1 crore each.

Apart from BCCI, state governments too have announced prize money for their respective players. The Maharashtra government awarded Rohit, Shivam Dube, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryakumar Yadav with INR 11 crore but the details of the breakdown have not been made public by the government.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded team India with $2.45 million, which is approximately INR 20.37 crore. BCCI’s financial stability helped them to reward all the players with almost six times the reward, which was not always the case. After the ODI World Cup win in 1983, the governing body announced a reward of INR 25,000 per player, much less than what the players received in modern times.

A source close to the BCCI told the Economic Times about the power of IPL and how it changed Indian cricket in terms of finance. He noted that BCCI also sent a clear message to all the players that if they prioritize international cricket, they will be earning truckloads of money.

“In the age of the IPL, where players are paid handsomely by their franchises, Rs 125 crore to a team for winning the T20 World Cup is a simple message to the players — win trophies for India and you’ll be cash-rich,” he said.

Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that Rohit will remain as the captain for the upcoming World Test Championship final and the Champions Trophy.
